The design of Kube evolved from the romantic ruins of the site, transforming it into a space in nature that optimizes the usage of the available area. The lounge is designed to accommodate different activities throughout the day, from morning yoga sessions to performing artists, workshops, and parties.
One of the key features of Kube is its open planning and courtyards, which allow for easy modification of the layout based on the event. The ambience of the space adds to its uniqueness, as it changes from a cozy brunch setting to a vibrant and lively musical evening. The transition from day to night creates a magical atmosphere, with the dimly lit space illuminated by the blanket of the starry night sky.
The realization of the Kube lounge design incorporates sustainable practices and local craftsmanship. The materials used, such as raw concrete, brick, metal, and wood, add a rugged character to the space and are sourced from local artisans. The design also maximizes natural ventilation to achieve a comfortable temperature within the lounge.
With a total area of 800 square meters, Kube offers ample space for guests to socialize and interact. The zoning of the lounge is governed by existing grid beams and columns, which are creatively utilized to create volumetric spaces and seating areas. The old doors and windows strategically placed throughout the lounge serve as transitions between different spaces and add a touch of nostalgia.
The Kube lounge design project started in March 2017 and was completed in July 2017 in Mumbai. It has since been exhibited in various events, including the Festival of Architecture and Interior Design in August 2018 and Wade in June 2018.
Mayur Gujare, Deval Shah, and their team of designers, including Methil Rathod, Mayur Aeer, and Chaitali Mistry, worked together to overcome the challenges posed by the existing framework and restrictive height obstacles. The use of natural raw materials in the design ensures that the lounge will age gracefully and maintain its elegance over time.
The Kube lounge design by Mayur Gujare and Deval Shah has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design category in 2019. This award is a testament to the design's practicality, innovation, and ability to meet professional and industrial requirements.
